In this history of leather culture, we’ll discuss briefly leather’s historical distinction from kink, the development of culture and history in the gay men’s scene starting in the 1960s, and then dive into the history of the leatherdyke scene. We’ll describe the historical context, the fights, the arguments, the orgs and what was at stake. Then, we’ll settle on trans women, our search for home and belonging, and the deep historical ties between leatherdykes and trans women.

Val Violet (ze/hir, she/her) and chastity vale (she/her) are leather historians, archivists, and educators based in the Seattle area. They are a white, butch/femme, trans woman leatherdyke couple, practicing a D/s dynamic. They are disabled and Covid-competent. Their practice is focused on disability and accessibility, leather and queer history, and archiving as a way to maintain history and culture. Val and chastity approach leather from a DIY and community-oriented perspective.

Val Violet (Ze/Hir, She/Her) is a leather educator, archivist, and leatherworker based in Seattle, WA. She is a white, butch, trans woman leatherdyke, a disabled, Covid-competent mobility aid user and a Dominant sadist. Having come up in New York’s leather scene, Val takes a DIY approach to organizing. Her work focuses on leather history, disability, and creative ways to hurt people. In addition to Hir education work, Val is the owner of Violet Leather Co., a Covid-safer event organizer, a leather archivist, and a member of House of Teeth and the Lesbian Sex Mafia.

chastity vale (she/her) is a white leatherdyke, a submissive, a trans woman, a dyke and a faggot. she is an artist working mostly in interactive fiction and video art, a writer, and a leather archivist and historian. her research has focused on trans women, inclusivity, and submission. she believes that honesty about desire can be radical, rebellious, and liberatory. chastity fucks in Seattle, Washington. she flags red, maroon, teal, black, and purple on the right.
